Hi, all. I've posted a few questions regarding the internal hard drive, and now i'm about at my wit's end. Please, is there anyone that can tell me what I'm doing wrong? The new hard drive keeps crashing. I finally successfully loaded all my songs, but I can't get through an entire mix without crashing. The drive is an IBM Travelstar 20 gig internal drive. I know others on this list have been using the same drive...Thanks in advance

The only stupid thing I can advice you is defrag. Make a try (or did you already done it?)

I tried to defrag twice, and each time it froze. I wonder if the drive is wrong. I bought the model because it was recommended here, so I know it's working for someone. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion

How much gig take all the songs you have loaded? Delete one or two, optimize all and try defrag again.

If you have successfully loaded all the songs, the drive should be ok (anyway to work corectely it must be valid for 5400 RpM)

Good luck!

I have read that the drive can only be a 4200RPM drive. Where did you see 5400?

Just so you can compare,my drives so far have worked very well.I have three 20gig drives + my 12g.The 20gigs are #IBM IC25NO20ATCS04 .....Part # 07N8325...4200rpm.One last thing to try...If you can, make sure your hard drive drawer is properly installed, including the multi pin cable inside, and also that the drive tray srews are good and snug.I dont know about the drive tray but the Y-56k card gets its ground from the screws that secure the tray.............Just a thought......Beej

Thanks, Beej. Yeah, I screwed those screws in tightly, but it keeps crashing. I think I'm going to stay with the drive that came with the unit for now. Thanks for getting back to me on this.

Have you checked the FAQ? There's info on
"Drive Compatibility and Questions". Maybe the problems you encounter are because the HD is not completely erased.
Anyway, check it out.

Correct me please if I'm wrong, but I thought the 4200 rpm speed of the drive was indicated just as a minimum standard, not as an absolute. There would be no reason I could see why a faster drive wouldn't work, or be benificial. Can someone point me to where this is stated in the literature? I looked, but don't see it...

I have 2 20 gig IBM TravelStars and the 12 gig that came with the unit. All 4200, and have had no problems...yet. I was gonna buy the 5400, but the company was out of stock.

It's no wonder your unit keeps crashing if you froze and shutdown during a defrag. I'd reformat the drive load one of the tunes that's been causing problems, and try again.
